چکیده
LOTSPEICH, WILLIAM D. Renal hypertrophy in metabolic acidosis and its relation to ammonia excretion. Am. J. Physiol. 208(6) : I 135-1142. 1 g65.-The chronic ingestion of NH&l causes a true growth of the rat kidney. This involves a symmetrical increase in wet weight, dry weight, and nitrogen of the kidney tissue. Total DNA and RNA are also elevated, indicating that both cell numbers and cell size have increased. The renal hypertrophy in chronic metabolic acidosis is the same order of magnitude as that seen in the remaining kidney after unilateral nephrectomy. The renal growth-stimulating effects of acidosis and unilateral nephrectomy are additive. In the acidotic rat the renal hypertrophy that occurs after unilateral nephrectomy can maintain a high rate of ammonia excretion without any further change in renal glutaminase activity of the remaining kidney. Thus in certain species the stimulation of renal growth may play a part in the increasing capacity to excrete ammonia during sustained metabolic acidosis.

Kidney protein dynamics and ammoniagenesis in humans with chronic metabolic acidosis.
To evaluate the effects of chronic metabolic acidosis on protein dynamics and amino acid oxidation in the human kidney, a combination of organ isotopic ((14)C-leucine) and mass-balance techniques in 11 subjects with normal renal function undergoing venous catheterizations was used. Five of 11 studies were performed in the presence of metabolic acidosis. In subjects with normal acid-base balance...

GOLDSTEIN, LEON. Relation of glutamate to ammonia producfion in the rat kidney. Am. J. Physidl. 210(3): 661-666. Ig66.-Glutamate was an effective inhibitor of isolated rat renal glutaminase at concentrations normally found in the kidney. Injection of monosodium glutamate into acidotic rats inhibited renal ammonia excretion about 507~ with no significant effect on urinary PH. Alterations in acid...
متن کاملRh versus pH: the role of Rhesus glycoproteins in renal ammonia excretion during metabolic acidosis in a freshwater teleost fish.
Increased renal ammonia excretion in response to metabolic acidosis is thought to be a conserved response in vertebrates. We tested the hypothesis that Rhesus (Rh) glycoproteins in the kidney of the freshwater common carp, Cyprinus carpio, play a crucial role in regulating renal ammonia excretion during chronic metabolic acidosis. Exposure to water pH 4.0 (72 h) resulted in a classic metabolic ...
متن کاملMechanisms of the Effects of Acidosis and Hypokalemia on Renal Ammonia Metabolism
Renal ammonia metabolism is the predominant component of net acid excretion and new bicarbonate generation. Renal ammonia metabolism is regulated by acid-base balance. Both acute and chronic acid loads enhance ammonia production in the proximal tubule and secretion into the urine. In contrast, alkalosis reduces ammoniagenesis. Hypokalemia is a common electrolyte disorder that significantly incr...
متن کاملAcid-Base, Electrolytes, and Renal Failure
1 Metabolic acidosis is a wellrecognized component of chronic renal failure (CRF). Metabolic acidosis in renal failure results primarily from the limited ability of failing kidneys to excrete hydrogen ions and regenerate bicarbonate. Normal acid-base balance is maintained by a combination of tubular reabsorption of filtered bicarbonate and excretion of hydrogen ions with ammonia and urinary buf...
